Somatic Qigong

Cultivating functional freedom through movement, breath and awareness.

What is Somatic Qigong?

Somatic Qigong is an experiential practice for expanding awareness of the body’s functional phases and the transitions between them.
Through awareness of our body, breath, senses, felt experience and internal states, we learn to recognise our own natural rhythm and allow movement to emerge from within.
Rather than asking “How should this movement look?”, we begin to explore:

What is happening within?
What does the organism need now?

The practice gradually develops from basic qigong structures and principles into more spontaneous, flowing movement. As awareness and experience become clearer, movement can become less dependent on technique and more responsive, adaptable and authentic.

From structure to freedom

Somatic Qigong doesn’t mean abandoning structure.
The structure provides a foundation from which greater freedom can emerge.
We gradually explore the relationship between:

  • movement
  • breath
  • the senses
  • felt sense
  • internal awareness
  • posture
  • rhythm

As these elements become more aligned or coordinated, the organism can organise itself with more efficiency and less unnecessary effort.

The practice can then open into spontaneous movement, where direction, rhythm and expression arise naturally from the current state.

Less technique. More freedom. More adaptability.

Beyond the practice

The principles explored through Somatic Qigong aren’t limited to a practice session.

They can influence how we walk, work, dance, exercise, breathe, rest and respond to changing circumstances.

The same functional principles can be explored through other movement disciplines and everyday activities.

This makes Somatic Qigong a complementary practice rather than a system that needs to replace what you already do.

It can bring another layer of awareness to whatever movement, therapeutic or embodied practice you already have.

About Jan

My self-development path began in my early 20s in meditation and Daoist methods, then deepened through two decades of study within System Talgar – the base framework behind Four Seasons Qi.  Along the way I trained in Meridian Pressure Massage and Sound Healing with Tibetan bowls, and completed Pravilo teacher training in 2023. In 2024 I added visceral massage, and it quickly became central to my therapy work – few therapies reach the core of our organism, our vital organs, as effectively.

The Four Seasons Within

At the foundation of the practice is an exploration of the Four Seasons of the Human Microcosm — AOUM.

The four phases describe fundamental functional states and transitions within the living organism. They can be experienced through movement, breathing, posture, sensation, emotion and perception.

We explore both active and passive phases of Yin and Yang, developing the ability to recognise how the organism shifts between different qualities rather than becoming fixed in one.

This awareness gives us more possibilities in how we respond.

Instead of forcing ourselves into a particular state, we learn to recognise what is already present and discover how the next functional phase can emerge.

Awareness of these phases becomes a foundation for adaptability and functional freedom.

A practice for exploration

Somatic Qigong is not about achieving a particular form or mastering a predetermined sequence.

It is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between structure and internal state.

With practice, the four phases become less of an intellectual framework and more something that can be recognised directly through experience.

Feel the change.
Follow the transition.
Allow the movement.
